What’s happening in Terms 3 and 4?
Here is our curriculum map for 2018-19.
This is our Topic Web for Terms 3 and 4.
In term 1 Year 1’s topic is dinosaurs. The children will become archaeologists and dig for dinosaur bones! In science they will be learning all about Animals. In particular they will be looking at reptiles, birds, fish and mammals and will be able to name a range of these and describe their structures. They will know the difference between a carnivore and a herbivore and will explore different animal habitats using the animals on the school site to aid their learning.
There is going to be lots of Literacy opportunities for the children and they will be linking their knowledge of dinosaurs to their writing. Year 1 will also be learning all about colour mixing in art and by the end of the term they will have created their own landscape based on where a dinosaur would have lived.
In Geography they will look at physical and human features in hot and cold areas of the world, explore compass points and will increase their range of directional vocabulary. In term 2 they will have a change of topic and become explorers. Their learning will have a Space theme and in history the children will be researching the great explorer Neil Armstrong. They will then create fact files in Literacy using all of the great knowledge that they have learned. They will be investigating materials in science and will use their findings to create spaceships in DT, focusing on materials that are strong and flexible. They will participate in gym, dance and games in PE and much more. Alongside this learning, there will be lots of other opportunities and activities in subjects such as RE, Maths and computing to really widen the children’s knowledge and to ensure that they have lots of fun!
With the introduction of a new National Curriculum, Westbury Leigh CE Primary School has created an engaging, challenging and stimulating curriculum which provides a range of immersive opportunities to learn for all of its children. It is underpinned by our School’s vision and has our School values at its core. Children use a wide range of ICT, laptops and devices alongside interactive whiteboards in each classroom. Our exciting topics have entry and exit points to begin and finish the topics being taught together with establishing links within our community. Connections are made between curriculum areas making the learning more relevant and meaningful for our children.
