Starting School & Transition

Applying for a place at Westbury Leigh

Westbury Leigh Primary School prides itself on its dedication to education and we look to try and accommodate those who seek a place at our school.

The School Admissions team at Wiltshire Council are responsible for allocating primary school places at local authority schools in Wiltshire.

To apply for a place at Westbury Leigh Primary School, please visit the Wiltshire Council's Schools and Colleges page for further information on how you can apply online or by post.

Our Admission Policy 2016/17 and Admission Policy 2017/18 contain all relevant information for applying for a place at Westbury Leigh Primary School.

Every day is an open day at the school and although our website will give you an insight into our schools ethos and facilities, it will probably not answer all your questions. The fantastic atmosphere of our school is less easy to convey on the website, and nothing is quite as good as a personal visit, so why not come and take a tour!

Should you wish to come and view our school, which we thoroughly encourage, please contact the school office on 01373 822230 and we will be more than happy to arrange an appointment.

Starting school for the first time

As a school we understand that starting school for the first time can be difficult for some children and we pride ourselves on having a smooth transition into school not only from the local nurseries but for those who have not attended nursery school.

In the summer term prior to your child attending school our Reception Team Leader will visit each of the local nurseries to discuss the transition. Our team then undertakes home visits for each child registered to attend our school.

Once September comes around new pupils are split into two groups with children attending either a morning or afternoon session for the first 2 weeks to allow the children to settle in gradually and allowing children and staff to spend quality time getting to know each other in smaller groups.  At the beginning of the third week all children will attend school full time.

Transition to Secondary School

When our year six pupils near the end of their time at our school we begin to think about their transition to secondary school.  As part of this all children will have the opportunity to visit the school they will attend as well as completing activities in preparation for this new start.

For those children who need more support we can tailor a more bespoke plan in consultation with both parents and the secondary school. Please look at our Transition Policy for key information.

We feed into both Matravers in Westbury and Kingdown in Warminster.
